Basingstoke IVC Science Cafe invite you to this free Royal Institution talk titled "Trailblazing tales of women astronomers"

ADVANCE BOOKING IS REQUIRED FOR THIS TALK.

https://www.rigb.org/whats-on/trailblazing-tales-women-astronomers

SUMMARY

Before 1900, a woman who wanted to study the stars had to have a father, brother, or husband to do so. Now, after decades of difficult struggles, women are closer to equality in astronomy than ever before.

Join astronomer and book editor David Weintraub, and astronomers Hiranya Peiris and Carole Mundell as they explore an internationally diverse collection of autobiographical essays. Find out about the women who broke down barriers and changed the face of modern astronomy.

In this talk, discover the historical voices of a transformative era in astronomy and inspiration for current and future generations of women scientists.

SPEAKERS

Hiranya Peiris is a Professor of Astrophysics in the Astrophysics Group in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at UCL. She is the founding Director and current co-Director of the UCL Cosmoparticle Initiative which brings together researchers in the Astrophysics, High Energy Physics, and Atomic, Molecular, Optical, and Positron (AMOPP) Groups with space scientists from the Mullard Space Science Laboratory.

Hiranya also leads the UCL involvement in the Quantum Simulators for Fundamental Physics (QSimFP) Consortium, funded by UKRI’s Quantum Technologies for Fundamental Physics programme.

Carole Mundell is Professor of Extragalactic Astronomy at the University of Bath where she holds the Hiroko Sherwin Chair in Extragalactic Astronomy, and a Fellow of the Institute of Physics. She was the Chief International Science Envoy at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office from January to October 2021. Previously she was Chief Scientific Adviser at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office.

Prof David Weintraub is Director of Program in Communication of Science & Technology in the Physics & Astronomy Department at Vanderbilt University.

Basingstoke IVC Science Cafe invite you to this free Royal Institution talk titled "Existential physics: Answering life’s biggest questions"

SUMMARY

Do we have free will? Is the universe compatible with God? Do we live in a computer simulation? Does the universe think?

Join theoretical physicist Sabine Hossenfelder as she draws on the latest research in quantum mechanics, black holes, string theory and particle physics to explore what modern physics can tell us about the big questions.

In this talk, Sabine explores counterintuitive insights, and interviews with other leading scientists, to reshape your understanding of science and the limits of what we can know.

SPEAKER

Sabine Hossenfelder is a physicist and science writer.

Sabine is currently a research fellow at the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies. Sabine's research focuses on the foundations of physics, but her interests extend to the philosophy and sociology of science.

Sabine partly works as science writer. Her writing has been published, among others, in 'Scientific American', 'New Scientist', 'Nautilus', 'Aeon', and the 'New York Times'. Sabine has an active YouTube Channel dedicated to communicating current science news and scientific methods in general.

This is a livestream and in-person (RI Theatre, London) event.

Basingstoke IVC Science Cafe invite you to this free Royal Society talk titled "The Politics of DNA"

SUMMARY

All science is political. Though the scientific methods have been designed over the centuries to free our understanding of reality from the baggage of perceptive and psychological biases, and the grubby world of politics, it's an ideal we strive for, but have never achieved.

All new discoveries exist in the culture in which they are born, and are always susceptible to abuse. In this talk, Dr Adam Rutherford will be exploring how the abuses in his own fields of evolution and genetics - by politicians, ideologues and by scientists themselves - were central to the most heinous crimes of modern history. Adam will be arguing that scientists must know their own histories, and how Darwin's phrase 'ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge' should be a mantra for our times.

SPEAKER

The Royal Society David Attenborough Award and Lecture is awarded annually to an individual for outstanding public engagement with science. The award, open to everyone, recognises high quality public engagement activities. The award is named after the United Kingdom’s best-loved naturalist and broadcaster, and honorary Fellow of the Royal Society, David Attenborough. In 2021, this award was given to Dr Adam Rutherford for his contribution to strengthening public confidence in science through radio, TV, films, talks and books, and in particular, for challenging racist pseudoscience.

This is a livestream only event.

TIMING
The live stream will go live at 6:55pm, and the introduction will begin at 7:00pm. If you register but miss the live stream, the video will be available to you via the same link for up to a week after the event date.

Basingstoke IVC Science Cafe invite you to this free Royal Institution talk titled "Searching for new physics with low-energy techniques"

SUMMARY

In our quest to understand the nature of matter and mass, we draw on knowledge from many different fields, combining our understanding of the behaviour of the smallest known subatomic particles with our observations of the dynamics of galaxies and clusters of galaxies at unimaginably large length scales.

Join Danielle Speller as she discusses exciting experiments at the intersection of nuclear, particle, and astrophysics that use low-background, cryogenic detection techniques to look for tiny signals of undiscovered phenomena that would herald new physics.

Our current understanding of physics already does an excellent job of creating a unified picture of how it all fits together.

But in this talk, Danielle will explore how important questions – including the origin of the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry and the makeup of an invisible mass component in galaxies – challenge our understanding, and hint that there are deeper descriptions beyond our standard models of particle physics and cosmology.

SPEAKER

Danielle Speller is a researcher in experimental nuclear and particle astrophysics. Her work centres on understanding the nature of matter and mass through low-energy, cryogenic searches for physics beyond the standard model.

Danielle is a collaborator on both the Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) and the Haloscope at Yale Sensitive to Axion Cold dark matter (HAYSTAC), as well as related research and development projects. Her graduate work was with the Super Cryogenic Dark Matter Search experiment (SuperCDMS).

Danielle was a Park Scholar at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina, and graduated with a double-major in physics and applied mathematics. She earned her PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, and joined the Maruyama Lab at Yale University’s Wright Laboratory in 2017 as a Postdoctoral Associate.

This is a livestream only event.
