Cafe Scientifique is a national movement for science and technology in casual settings: each has its own character but all are fun, engaging, informal and explore fascinating ideas in science and technology.

Cyber Cafe Sci is online - capturing the cafe experinece through the informal Gather platform that lets you watch, listen, and join in if you wish.

SUMMARY
At this event we join a conversation with Tracey Williams - beach cleaner and beach comber, collector of Lego Lost at Sea and author of Adrift - to talk about Lego (obviously), plastic pollution, Cornwall, ocean currents, green dragons and whatever else comes to mind.

Writer and beachcomber Tracey Williams has always been intrigued by chance finds and the stories and folklore behind them, from shells and sea glass discovered on childhood holidays in Cornwall to flints and fossils unearthed in fields.

In 1997, after finding thousands of pieces of sea-themed Lego washed up on beaches in South Devon, she became interested in the changing nature of beach combing and began to research the age and origin of many of the man made items she discovered. Her plastic finds sparked an internet phenomenon on Facebook and Twitter, and led to insights into ocean currents, shipping accidents, plastic pollution, and what happens to plastic in the sea.

SPEAKER
Tracey's best selling book: "Adrift - the Curious Tale of the Lego Lost at Sea" is a beautiful book, telling a fascinating story, a warning of the impact of plastic pollution, and an inspiration to anyone to check the beach beneath their feet for unexpected treasures.

Tracey lives in Cornwall in an old house by the sea with her dog Jess, surrounded by piles of books and an ever-growing mound of beach finds.
