Basingstoke IVC Science Cafe invite you to this free Royal Institution talk titled "Trailblazing tales of women astronomers" ADVANCE BOOKING IS REQUIRED FOR THIS TALK. Please register for the event via this link: https://www.rigb.org/whats-on/trailblazing-tales-women-astronomers SUMMARY Before 1900, a woman who wanted to study the stars had to have a father, brother, or husband to do so. Now, after decades of difficult struggles, women are closer to equality in astronomy than ever before. Join astronomer and book editor David Weintraub, and astronomers Hiranya Peiris and Carole Mundell as they explore an internationally diverse collection of autobiographical essays. Find out about the women who broke down barriers and changed the face of modern astronomy. In this talk, discover the historical voices of a transformative era in astronomy and inspiration for current and future generations of women scientists. SPEAKERS Hiranya Peiris is a Professor of Astrophysics in the Astrophysics Group in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at UCL. She is the founding Director and current co-Director of the UCL Cosmoparticle Initiative which brings together researchers in the Astrophysics, High Energy Physics, and Atomic, Molecular, Optical, and Positron (AMOPP) Groups with space scientists from the Mullard Space Science Laboratory. Hiranya also leads the UCL involvement in the Quantum Simulators for Fundamental Physics (QSimFP) Consortium, funded by UKRI’s Quantum Technologies for Fundamental Physics programme. Carole Mundell is Professor of Extragalactic Astronomy at the University of Bath where she holds the Hiroko Sherwin Chair in Extragalactic Astronomy, and a Fellow of the Institute of Physics. She was the Chief International Science Envoy at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office from January to October 2021. Previously she was Chief Scientific Adviser at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office. Prof David Weintraub is Director of Program in Communication of Science & Technology in the Physics & Astronomy Department at Vanderbilt University. This is a livestream only event.
